Types of sports bikes
Sports bikes, as the name suggests, are bikes that are built for adrenalin junkies who love to set the road on fire. These ‘crotch rockets’ have heavy engines that drip power. It might safely be said that sports bikes are tamed beasts that subject themselves to masterful handling but become deadly at the slightest show of weakness from the rider.
Sports bikes are built for maximum speed, instant acceleration and deceleration, and supreme maneuverability. Design elements like a lightweight frame, streamlined body, wide wheel base and high performance engines ensure this. The structural integrity of the bike is important and design elements combined with great chassis rigidity are important aspects of the sports bike. Sports bikes also host superior braking and suspension systems, which work to improve stability and durability of the bike. Wide tires are meant to support increased lean angles and better cornering speeds.
These days, sports bikes have undergone revolutionary design changes. While many riders like to customize their bike before they race, some of these bikes are so good that they may be used on the track straight from the shop floor!
There are different kinds of sports bikes although this classification is not officially recognized. Each class has a set of unique features.
The first group is the entry level sports bike. These are for beginners and as such are lightweight and durable with a minimum of features. Fairings may be absent to cut down on cost. Engines are not tuned for maximum power as these bikes are for beginners and durability is more important at this level than power.
Small capacity sports bikes are a rare species because their production has now been strictly hampered by strict emission rules. These bikes may be 2 or 4 stroke bikes with engine capacity of 125cc to 400cc. These bikes are so called because they are short and are best suited for short riders. These have a short wheelbase and a lightweight body which puts some restriction on power output but offer handling characteristics that are similar to ordinary sports bikes.
Super sports bikes are made for the race tracks. These middleweight sports bikes have powerful engines ranging from 600 cc to 800 cc and produce approximately 100bhp. Since riders need to be very focused on the race track, this bike may not be ideal for riders who are shorter than 5 ft 2 in. The ergonomics of the bike is best suited for taller, heavier riders.
Hyper sport bikes are meant for top speeds. So, they are powered by powerful engines of 1,100cc to 1,400cc. These bikes are bulkier than super sports bikes as they weigh almost more than 200 kilos. The increase in weight contributes to increase in stability.
About the Author
Sports bikes are not for travel and do not have any of the riding comforts of ordinary bikes. The sport touring bike is a variation that caters to rider comfort. The sports bike also provides sufficient carrying capacity so that they are useful for longer distances.
