Woody, Buzz, Jessie, Slinky Dog, Mr and Mrs Potato Head and the rest of the gang are back for one final go in Pixar’s enduring classic series. The toys owner, Andy … a child in the first 2 movies, has grown up and is about to go away to college. He plans to take Woody with him as a beloved reminder of his childhood. The remaining toys he packs up with intentions of storing them in the attic.
Woody is both happy and sad, torn between accompanying Andy to college where they can be together and the fact that he will be leaving all his toy friends behind. However things change when a mix-up causes Woody and the rest of the gang to be accidently donated to a local day-care center.
Instead of living a comfortable life as they have known all along, the toys suddenly find themselves up against a bunch of runny nosed, slobbering and grabbing toddlers who don’t treat their toys very well. And if that isn’t enough, the toys already at the day care center are not eager to share their turf with strangers. The leader of these indigenous toys is a cute and deceivingly friendly Lots-o’-Huggin’ Teddy Bear (voiced by Ned Beatty). His charming and folksy manner hide an alarming dark side.

Hands-down the best new character is the scene stealing Ken doll. Michael Keaton provides the voice, and he plays him like some type of ascot wearing, disco dancing swinger from the 1970s. Every time Ken is on screen the audience was laughing. He sweeps Barbie off her feet with his smooth-talking banter and compliments.
The rest of the movie deals with the toys trying to get out of their dangerous predicament and back home. The last third of the film is fast and frantic and probably the best stretch of action in the entire trilogy as the Toys try to avoid a certain demise in a landfill.
Toy Story 3 is more emotional and touching than the first 2 editions. The characters deal with loss, separation and the ultimate effects of time. With Andy gone the toys are forced to consider life different from what they’ve known. It is a tribute to Pixar that they can make us feel so much for these characters.
The first thing you notice watching Toy Story 3 is just how vivid and bright the movie looks. Toy Story 1 looked great back in 1995, but this version is simply unbelievable. No doubt this is due to the tremendous leap in computer animation technology in the past 15 years. Match that with Pixar spending 4 years of continuous work and $200 million dollars and you have an unmatched classic such as this.
But making a great looking movie simply isn’t enough for Pixar. The story and writing has to be world class. Consider that of Pixar’s first 10 movies, 9 were complete originals. They rarely make sequels. And when they do they normally follow years after the original film. This is unheard of in Hollywood. If another movie studio had made Toy Story, you can bet there would have been a Toy Story 1, Toy Story 2, Toy Story 3, Toy Story 4 and Toy Story 5 all within the first 5 years. And all would have been watered down copies of the original in an effort to suck the money well dry.
It has been reported that Pixar is just now getting around to making follow-ups to their past features Cars and Monsters Inc. Want to bet against these being instant classics in their own right?
So Toy Story 3 completes the trilogy first started back in 1995 from a then unknown animation studio founded by Steve Jobs. Along the way Pixar has created some of the best and most treasured animated movies ever such as A Bug’s Life; Toy Story 2; Monsters, Inc.; Finding Nemo; The Incredibles; Cars; Ratatouille; WALLE and Up. As good as all of those are, Toy Story 3 sets the bar even higher for the next movie.
