Leading Economic Think Tank suggests swimming with Sharks by EasyEditor Newswire
Seaside communities should follow the lead of the Canary Islands and cash in on the country’s rich marine wildlife to attract divers to swim with sharks off the coast of Scotland, claims a leading economic think tank.
According to the New Economics Foundation (NEF) better conservation measures to protect the UK’s 21 species of sharks, 16 types of skates and rays along with a campaign to push marine tourism could generate hundreds of jobs and millions of pounds for the economy.
Research by the La Universidad de la Laguna, Tenerife found shark and ray watching by divers brings in £14.5 million to the Canary Islands each year and experts think similar benefits could be seen here.
At least 21 species of shark occur around the coasts of Britain, from the Small-spotted Catshark to the large streamlined Blue Shark and plankton eating Basking Shark. At least half of British Sharks, including the Dogfish, Porbeagle and Basking Shark, are year round residents while Blue Sharks and Short Fin Makos are summer visitors.
The West Coast of Scotland especially is a key area for basking sharks with some areas around the western isles reporting four times as many basking sharks than elsewhere in the UK.
“The marine environment is a key economic asset to countries like the UK. Wildlife tourism already brings millions to our local economies but much of the marine environment remains an untapped resource that needs to be looked into in more detail,” said Aniol Esteban, head of environmental economics at nef.
“Sharks and rays could be a very exciting starting point to explore the benefits for UK marine wildlife tourism. Better conservation of the marine environment will undoubtedly bring opportunities for UK coastal communities helping them secure longer term income flows and employment.”
Wildlife tourism is a growing sector, generating a net economic impact of around £65 million for the economy and accounting for over one million trips to Scotland every year.
“Wildlife tourism is one of the main reasons many people give for visiting some our more rural hostels across Scotland,” said a spokesperson for SYHA Hostelling Scotland.
“Hostels throughout the west coast and islands – particular the likes of Kirkwall in Orkney, Oban, Tobermory, Skye, Ullapool and Tongue, – are already popular destinations for the international diving community who are coming to Scotland in increasing numbers every year.
“Our stunning seas and coasts support a wealth of wildlife and play a key role in attracting visitors from home and abroad. The public’s increasing awareness and interest in our marine environment is being translated into tangible economic benefits.”
